BCBAL is a unique program. It has many positives, but there are some things that work differently than with other companies. We have learned to work very well with the model they have. We will try to highlight some points of how commissions are paid this time of year.
General things to know about BCBSAL Commissions:
All commissions come to Alabama Health Guidance from BCBSAL. We pay those out to you within 2 days of receiving the deposit from them.
AHG does not reduce your commissions as an administrative fee. We pay you 100% of what you should be paid.
Commissions are paid the month AFTER the effective date.
If a member switches from one BCBSAL policy to another, the original effective date is what continues to show on our reports. (just how their system works)
Premiums must be up to date for us to receive commission from BCBSAL
Chargebacks normally don't reflect on commission statements for 6 months.
There is an audit process if you believe you didn't get paid for an enrollment that you submitted.
In your Commission Portal you will find separate tabs for Commissions and Renewals.
Commissions on members who switched from Complete to Choice were paid to us as a renewal. We've tried to manually move all of these to be paid as a new enrollment instead of a renewal. This will allow us to send you 100% of your commission now, and not hold 25% like we would if it were a renewal.
AEP Commissions
(business written with a 1-1-25 effective date)
Policies with a 1-1-25 effective date will be paid in Feb. (Sometimes we receive the AEP commissions payment from BCBSAL a little later than normal. It requires higher approval because of the amount.)
BCBSAL pays based on the CMS compensation rules. They pay 100% of whats allowed.
Chargebacks from AEP business normally don't start showing up until June - Aug commission statements.
If you enrolled a BCBSAL plan for a 1-1-2025 effective date and did not receive commission, please fill out the Audit Form. We will research the issue the best we can and try to get it resolved for you.
If you switched a member from Complete to Choice and didn't receive a commission, please fill out this Audit Form. We will need you to verify some information so we can try to assist you.
Blue Advantage Renewals
(Policies with an effective date prior to 1-1-25)
Policies with an effective date prior to 1-1-25, and kept their plan for 2025, will be paid as a "renewal".
BCBSAL sends us the renewal commission as an annual payment, not monthly. Most every other company pays us renewals on a monthly basis.
We pay 75% of those commissions to you in a lump sum
We hold 25% of the renewal commission to cover chargebacks.
We pay the remaining 25% (minus chargebacks throughout the year) to you in Oct each year.
Lost Current Members who Switched Plans
BCBSAL wants to help get you credit for your current members who called into BCBSAL and switched to Choice without you.
There are a few things that will need to be verified before we can send them into BCBSAL to be audited.
You had to have received a commission on this member in 2024 to be eligible to be paid a renewal.
You must get the member to write a letter stating that they want you to be their "Agent of Record". This letter must be attached to the Audit Form.
The member must still be on Blue Advantage
Members who Called BCBS to switch from Complete to Choice
If your member switched from Complete to Choice using BCBSAL customer service, we can try to get the Agent of Record (AOR) corrected for you. There a few thing that need to be verified before can submit the request to BCBSAL:
You must have received compensation for that member in 2024. This is what we'll review to make sure it was your member to begin with. BCBSAL will NOT reassign the AOR on members that we did not originally enroll.
You must complete the Agent of Record letter and have your member sign it. You can attach a signed copy of that letter to the Audit Form that you will need to fill out to have the AOR corrected.
The switch had to have been made by BCBSAL internal call center. If another licensed agent outside of BCBSAL enrolled your member, there's nothing we can do about it.
Some most companies have an AOR protection process. Some would argue how accurate and effective some of the are haha. BCBSAL and Alabama Health Guidance will do everything we can to do the right thing. We must be able to verify these things to submit the request to BCBSAL to ensure that we are asking for corrections on the appropriate members.
