OEP - Medicare Open Enrollment

The MA OEP runs from Jan. 1 to March 31


Here are some important facts about this once-a-year opportunity to enroll in a different MA plan:


  • Who can participate: People already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan as of Jan 1

  • What Changes can be made?
    • Switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan with or without drug coverage
    • Switch back to original Medicare, and if needed, add a Medicare Part D plan

  • How many changes allowed per period: One

  • When changes take effect: The first of the following month after receipt of the enrollment.

During OEP an agent can not:


Agents cannot send marketing materials that specifically reference the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period such as:

  • Mailers, emails, or calls promoting the ability to change plans during OEP.

  • Any materials encouraging beneficiaries to reconsider decisions made during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP).

To make the most of OEP while Staying Compliant, focus on the following areas:


  • At a beneficiary's request, agents can schedule individual meetings to review their current plans, discuss options and provide education on alternatives.

  • The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is an opportunity to deliver real value to your current members while staying within the CMS rules. By scheduling plan reviews and focusing on client needs, like plan education and drug coverage. You will build trust and loyalty among your members.
